Year's end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us. - Hal Borland
“Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift of God, which is why we call it the present.” - Bil Keane
A new year is unfolding - like a blossom with petals curled tightly concealing the beauty within. - Unknown
We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day. - Edith Lovejoy Pierce
"New year, same goal" - Joe King
“Everything you can imagine is real.” - Pablo Picasso
I made no resolutions for the New Year. The habit of making plans, of criticizing, sanctioning and molding my life, is too much of a daily event for me. - Anaïs Nin
“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” - Mahatma Gandhi
An optimist stays up until midnight to see the New Year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves. - Bill Vaughn
New Year's Day is every man's birthday. - Charles Lamb
“There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” - Albert Einstein
Cheers to a New Year and another chance for us to get it right. - Oprah Winfrey
“It is never too late to be what you might have been.” -George Eliot
Another fresh new year is here . . .
Another year to live!
To banish worry, doubt, and fear,
To love and laugh and give!
This bright new year is given me
To live each day with zest . . .
To daily grow and try to be
My highest and my best!
I have the opportunity
Once more to right some wrongs,
To pray for peace, to plant a tree,
And sing more joyful songs!
- William Arthur Ward
Making resolutions is a cleansing ritual of self-assessment and repentance that demands personal honesty and, ultimately, reinforces humility. Breaking them is part of the cycle. - Eric Zorn
“If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude. Don't complain.” - Maya Angelou
Drop the last year into the silent limbo of the past. Let it go, for it was imperfect, and thank God that it can go. - Brooks Atkinson
New Year's eve is like every other night; there is no pause in the march of the universe, no breathless moment of silence among created things that the passage of another twelve months may be noted; and yet no man has quite the same thoughts this evening that come with the coming of darkness on other nights. - Hamilton Wright Mabie
For last year's words belong to last year's language and next year's words await another voice. - T.S. Eliot
“Listen to the mustn'ts, child. Listen to the don'ts. Listen to the shouldn'ts, the impossibles, the won'ts. Listen to the never haves, then listen close to me... Anything can happen, child. Anything can be.” - Shel Silverstein
The object of a new year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul. - G.K. Chesterton
“Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” - Mother Teresa
Ring out the old, ring in the new, Ring, happy bells, across the snow: The year is going, let him go; Ring out the false, ring in the true. - Alfred, Lord Tennyson
“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go...” - Dr. Seuss
Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each new year find you a better man. - Benjamin Franklin
“Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” - Mahatma Gandhi
“This life is what you make it. Not matter what, you're going to mess up sometimes, it's a universal truth. But the good part is you get to decide how you're going to mess it up. Girls will be your friends - they'll act like it anyway. But just remember, some come, somg go. The ones that stay with you through everything - they're your true best friends. Don't let go of them. Also remember, sisters make the best friends in the world. As for lovers, well, they'll come and go too. And babe, I hate to say it, most of them - actually pretty much all of them are going to break your heart, but you can't give up because if you give up, you'll never find your soul mate. You'll never find that half who makes you whole and that goes for everything. Just because you fail once, doesn't mean you're gonna fail at everything. Keep trying, hold on, and always, always, always believe in yourself, because if you don't, then who will, sweetie? So keep your head high, keep your chin up, and most importantly, keep smiling, because life's a beautiful thing and there's so much to smile about.” - Marilyn Monroe

Comment by Mara on January 5, 2012 at 7:33pm @LuckyStar, I have thought alot about the heartfelt comment you posted. Being goal oriented and our desire to accomplish is a slippery slope... it gets slippery when we are focused on the variance of where we fell short of our expectations versus the variance of what we actually accomplished and what we actually acheived. If we are fixated on the "have-nots" and our "lack-of", we are focusing our energy on the negative variance, rather than the positive variance of what we have acheived, and simply- who we are. because the truth is, even wothout the acheivments and even when we fall short of our self imposed expectationms... we are enough. In many ways our society emphasizes where we fell short rather than what we accomplished.
Another intersting thing to think about is what is motivating us to want to acheive more? is it related to some sort of fear or lacking or feeling of not being good enough, smart enough...ENOUGH! I found myself very inspired and excited about the New Year, to move forward. I made a series of goals and after i wrote them down, i went back and evaluated not only the intent behind the goal, but what motivated or inspired the goal. I wanted to make sure they were heart-centered and not ego-centered. it can be slippery and sneaky if we arent concious, and wanting to be more is dangerious and in some ways unacheivable...because we already are mroe. We are enough. Plain and Simple. But thats not to say that goals arent a good thing. do you know what i mean?
I came across this awesome article and wanted to share it!
"But few of us have had much teaching, from parents, from "society," that told us that what is simple is what rings true inside our hearts. No one ever told us that we could live trusting our hearts. No one ever told us that we could be God or that we are how God operates. Everything we have ever seen, heard, learned, was about seeing ourselves as separated from the rest of the world. If we are separated from anything then, by definition, we must live in fear of that because it is not part of us; it is out there, somewhere. If something that is important to us is out there, then we can lose it and if we can lose it, we must constantly be in fear that we can lose it and as a consequence, attempt to control it so that we do not. Loss. Control. Ego. The triumvirate.
All that we have learned has told us to ignore our hearts and follow our minds. We have been taught that lesson because it is consistent with fear. It is consistent with fear because it presumes that our minds can figure anything out. Equate the mind with control and you can see that fear is the frame of reference in which the mind operates. And fear is the same as ego because fear comes from the separation between our hearts and the rest of Eternity and that is the same definition as ego.
In truth of course, learning to let go of ego, learning to let it die, is a hard lesson to learn. But despite its difficulty, it appears to be the only lesson if it is your goal to achieve peace. Or enlightenment. Or joy. Or love. It is not the only lesson if it is your goal to accumulate furs, large cars and outer world goods. It is not the only lesson if your goal is to preserve a relationship. In short, it is not the only goal if your goal is anything outside of yourself. It is the only lesson if your goal is to reach that place where you can truly say: "I don't want to be better than you; I want to be better than me."

Comment by LuckyStar727 on January 4, 2012 at 7:05am It's never too late to be what you might have been....very nice quote. It hits me hard because whatever I try to do, it seems like I fall short. Maybe I am being too hard on myself, I've accomplished a lot for my age BUT YET I do not think so. I think I am lagging behind in so many arenas. I hope that this year, I can challenge myself more, be more proactive about my goals, and turn them all into reality. :)
