Scorpio Sun: The first word that comes to mind when describing any Scorpio is intense. Scorpio is the sign of extremes and the only sign of the Zodiac that is born with its own weapon. This stinger, when used to defend love and truth, becomes a powerful tool for transformation-internally and externally. The Sun’s energy is ego energy. It is how one interacts with other egos on the physical plane. Scorpio Suns work in society by drawing boundaries. It is when these boundaries are violated that people get stung. When on the Lightside, Scorpios are loyal, passionate, trustworthy, perceptive, and hardworking. If a Scorpio has gone Darkside, they can become vindictive, petty, lazy, and abusive. However, the power of transformation is always available to them.
Scorpio Rising: The Rising Sign, or the Ascendant, is the sign that was on the horizon when one was born. The Ascendant, among other things, is said to be a person’s multi-life sign, as well as affecting one’s personal appearance. Scorpio Risings will have life themes where they will be learning about boundaries, trust, and intimacy. Scorpio Risings also tend to have strong features, hawkish even, with intense eyes.
Scorpio Moon: The Moon’s energy rules emotions. As anything connected with Scorpio is intense, Lunar Scorpios tend to have intensity of feeling. There is also a certain stability, a steadiness lended to the emotions (Scorpio is a fixed sign). Lunar Scorpios will also experience the transformative, sometimes healing qualities, of the sign in relation to their feelings. They will, from time to time, have profound “changes of heart” about a person or situation. When these happen, people with their Moons in Scorpio have a chance to grow, to mature in their emotions. Lunar Scorpios may also be more comfortable with feelings, and with emotional intensity (from themselves and others), than folks with their Moon in another sign.
Fixed Water: Scorpio’s element is water, and its modality is fixed. Water is traditionally linked with emotions, intuition, and psychic ability because it can flow between the physical realm and the spiritual plane. Being a fixed sign, this modality lends a certain steadiness in these areas, a certain focus. The images associated with fixed water are the ocean and ice, neither changing very frequently, and the changes that do occur happen gradually over long periods of time. Neither should be underestimated though. The power of the ocean is seen everyday in massive storms, hurricanes, and tsunamis, but also in the life it provides to the creatures in it and the food it provides the humans outside of it. Glaciers, given time, can carve mountains. Both are forces to be reckoned with.
8th House~ Sex, Death, and Taxes: Scorpio rules the 8th house. Mary Ianniccheri, our Cancer blogger, has generously shared her insightful, 8th house findings with us. She writes,
“In old astrology books, 8th house is death, sex, other people's money, inheritance, shamanism, and magic. What is the idea behind this garage sale of energies? The Invisible. An eighth house person mediated the unseen with the seen world. The realm of inheritance is a tangible symbol of communion with our ancestors. When Frank dies, he becomes invisible. Falling in love is invisible, so is music, auras, force fields and electromagnetic waves. In the ancient world, everything 8th house was sacred. In today's world it's taboo. The task is to restore the taboo back to the sacred. Eighth house metaphysics 101 says the health of a thing is dependent upon all the invisible (force field) stuff that surrounds it. I am a frequent flyer in the eighth house; I have lots of planets there. It’s spooky and magical. It’s enlivening and scary. It will heal you or rip your head off.”
Symbols: Depending on which book you read, or which astrologer you consult, there are many, many symbols associated with Scorpio. Two symbols that appear again and again are the scorpion and the eagle (the eagle is the more modern interpretation of the phoenix-more on that momentarily). The two symbols show both ends of spiritual transformation. The scorpion uses its tail to sting in defense, to paralyze its prey, and to kill. So many Scorpios also use their razor sharp tongue and penetrating insights when their ego is wounded, in defense of a friend, and to guard a sacred truth.
The eagle rises above and can see the larger, universal picture. Such individuals are capable of great magic because they have put aside selfish ego drives and use their powers to help humanity as a whole. The phoenix is the symbol of transformation through death and appears in the mythologies of many ancient civilizations. According to myth, the phoenix lives for a thousand years, builds a nest, and then burns itself alive. The flames purify as well as destroy. When everything is reduced to ash, a young phoenix, or a phoenix egg, rises through the ashes. The new phoenix will live another thousand years. With such a lifecycle, the bird is considered immortal. Thus, Scorpios have to let parts of themselves die in order to be born into something newer and better. However, the real lesson falls in two parts: the ability to surrender to Death and trusting in the process of rebirth.
Pluto/Mars: Scorpio is ruled by the planet Pluto, though Mars was considered the earliest and first ruler of the sign. Pluto is the Latin name given to the Greek god Hades. In mythology, Hades was the god of the dead and presided over the Greek underworld. Another name for him was Dis Pater, or Rich Father, associating Pluto with wealth. Recall the 8th house and its connection to inheritance. Mars was the Roman god of war and is another incarnation of the Greek god Ares.
Mythology: Myths around Scorpius the Scorpion vary, but almost all of them have some connection to Orion. Orion is a figure from Greek mythology-a handsome giant, loved by mortal women and goddesses alike, and a hunter. Depending on the tale, Scorpius was sent by one god/goddess/king or another to kill Orion for one or another various reasons. The two fought and killed each other. Zeus put them in the sky to honor the battle they waged but set them apart to avoid further antagonism. Orion and Scorpius do not appear in the sky at the same time.
